Gruppo Mastrotto Express is Carbon Neutral
On the occasion of World Environment Day, we are proud to share with you another step towards sustainability: all the products of Gruppo Mastrotto Express, the largest prompt-delivery leather logistics hub in the world, which offers over 1,500 colours in 40 different collections and can process any order size within 48 hours, can be labelled as “Carbon Neutral” with respect to direct and indirect emissions – meaning that they do not have any negative impact on global warming.
Gruppo Mastrotto has managed to offset, for all its products offered through the prompt-delivery leather service ‘Gruppo Mastrotto Express’, both Scope 1 emissions – those generated directly by assets owned by the company or assets that the company controls operationally – and Scope 2 emissions which include emissions indirectly generated through the type of energy used.
The Carbon Neutrality certification is the extraordinary result of a path undertaken for many years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions starting from the optimization and efficiency of the production process: from the use of solar panels, to lower water consumption, from reduction in the use of chemical products to the introduction of methods of continuous improvement in production. Subsequently, the company decided to purchase only electricity from certified renewable sources.
A subsequent survey on company emissions revealed that the measures implemented up to that moment, while bringing significant environmental benefits, still did not fully eliminate the potential impact on global warming deriving from production processes and the use of energy.
In order to eliminate the residual impact originating from the tanning transformation, Gruppo Mastrotto has joined several United Nations emission offset programmes that address the climate emergency by supporting “green” initiatives.
The offsetting of emissions follows the guidelines set by the Kyoto Protocol, which allows corporations to offset their emissions by supporting sustainable development projects in emerging or developing economies.
Today Gruppo Mastrotto has chosen three projects for this purpose, located in India and Brazil, which focus on the production of electricity from renewable sources (wind and water) and biomass cogeneration (recovery of husk, a by-product of rice processing).
“This new milestone represents a fundamental step in our Sustainability Journey”, says Chiara Mastrotto, President of the Group, “a commitment towards sustainability that we have undertaken many years ago and that we painstakingly promote among our clients too. We are happy to announce it just a few days before World Environment Day, an event that every year reminds us how necessary and urgent it is for each of us to commit to making this world ever more sustainable. This extraordinary result was made possible thanks to dedication, excellent teamwork and significant investments and represents for us a further impulse to continue walking the path to sustainability with determination. Our Sustainability Journey does not stop here”.
