Preparation

During the first phases of the process, the raw hide is prepared for the tanning process.

Preparation plays a key role in removing impurities, grease and other unwanted substances from the hide, ensuring a clean base ready to absorb the tanning agents

Tanning methods

To prevent the pelt from rotting, it is necessary to proceed with a treatment capable of preserving it: tanning. There are different types of tanning, depending on the characteristics required in the final processing. The colour of the leather at the end of the operation reveals which agents have been used: blue (wet blue) indicates chrome tanning, white-beige (wet white) indicates chrome-free tanning, and light brown indicates vegetable tanning.

Wet blue tanning is used in a wide range of articles for subsequent use in clothing, shoes, bags and sofas. This is the most common type of tanning, currently used for about 80% of leathers.

Wet white tanning is a very technical tanning technique, used to achieve very high thermal stability. For this reason, it is the tanning technique most frequently used in the automotive and aviation sectors.

Lastly, vegetable tanning can use a mix of quebracho, chestnut and reed tannins, but still requires chemical auxiliary agents to complete the process. This method is currently in the development phase and is still evolving.

Finishing

After tanning, the pelts advance through a series of steps to obtain the desired final characteristics. The finishing phases include operations carried out using specialised machinery, performed with great precision to give the leather the desired qualities, such as softness, colour and lustre.

It is here that our commitment to excellence is expressed to its fullest, to ensure that each leather is the result of superb workmanship.

Last steps

Throughout the various stages of the production process, the leathers are screened by our experienced and qualified staff, who assess their condition and define which steps to take to maximise the quality of the finished product. At the end of the process, the “finished” leathers go through a series of quality checks to verify performance.

Physical tests include the measurement of resistance to tensile strength and abrasion to ensure that the leathers maintain their durability in time. Chemical tests, on the other hand, include checking for the presence of harmful or undesirable substances to ensure compliance with safety and eco-sustainability standards.

At this point, our leathers are ready to go anywhere in the world.
